TomTom XL 340T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic Edition) Review

The GOOD: I took a 3 hour trip to southern PA at the start of Labor Day weekend. I chose the fastest route but fully expected delays due to traffic and construction. The Tom Tom 340TM rerouted several times during the trip to faster routes. I arrived ahead of schedule.

The BAD: Downloading the new updated software and maps took a very long time (hours). A few times questions popped up on the Tom Tom requiring a yes/know decision, only the question was in a foreign language. I had to do an internet search to find a translation. This happened twice with different languages each time.

The UGLY: The time to reach customer service took a very long time (>1 hour)to reach only to be disconnected, then another hour wait again. I didn't get much help but eventually got the system to begin the download on my own after the foreign language question got answered. I got an email a couple later saying they considered the problem had been resolved??

Despite the long update and lack of timely customer service, the unit did perform well and comes recommended. Side Note, in other posts I learned that the XL340TM is customizable whereas the XL350 is a stripped down simplified version. I chose the XL340TM version for the many customizable features, as well as lifetime map and traffic updates.

The GPS works really well and the price is good however on my 8hr trip the GPS fell 4 times very annoying!!



So Far... Promo Code Issue - F. Jusino -
Cannot say much for it so far. But be aware that the "Promotion Code" issue is common. It shouldn't drag down my opinion of the device. It just so happens that mine came with one that had already been used ?!?!?! How does this happen?? What really started to worry me at first is that I had gotten a refurbished or returned unit, when I paid for a "new" one. Fortunately, the TomTom rep. confirmed that the serial number had not been registered before (should I still worry on this and dig deeper with Amazon?)

Well - so far, I've spent over 2 hours trying to figure out why my "promotion code" didn't work. Once I had found out I had a "Used Promo Code" - Another hour or so with the TomTom rep. creating proofs that I had purchased this unit "new" from Amazon.com.

OK - just ended the session with TomTom (very professional people by the way, hold time is a little long, but it is the weekend). And they got my account to have the LifeTime Maps. Finally! I guess I'll know for sure in a few months if it all works out.
I will also know soon how the unit fairs on the road and in traffic.
I wish I could give it a higher star rating. I feel like it really should be at least a 4.

two defective devices, Never Again. - Girls' Mom - Summit, NJ
I bought the tomtom 340tm live and have had nothing but nightmares. After a week and a half of phone calls and waiting on hold while they helped other customers for 3-4 minutes at a time, they agreed it was broken and sent a label for me to return the item for replacement. Waited for fedex. Hooked up the new device, very excited. No room for the map on the device. 15 minutes on hold. Remove tomtom files from computer and reload. Map downloading takes a couple of hours-you should be fine. No dice, still no map. Call back with reference number, wait on hold for 15 minutes. Remove again. Update. Will take too long for me to stay on with you, call back if you have trouble. An hour later everything appears to be working. Get in car with shiny new device. No live services. Call again, wait on hold for 10 minutes. One hour and 6 minutes later I am told that I can mail back the new device and they will send me a new one, but first I need to check how long you have had the device. Five hours I answer and I spent most of that on hold with tomtom. They will not give refund. Never again.
